THE LORD OF THE RINGS - by JRR Tolkien
Skies of Rohan - the Idaho and Montana Tolkien Society is a USA branch of The Tolkien Society, dedicated to providing JRR Tolkien's THE LORD OF THE RINGS to middle and high school libraries throughout the states of Idaho and Montana.
Many new fans have been introduced to the story by the movies, but have not read the books. To give students in middle and high schools more of an opportunity to read these books, Skies of Rohan is actively involved in the distribution of THE LORD OF THE RINGS books to school libraries in Idaho and Montana. The books are purchased by Skies of Rohan and are then sent to those school libraries that have requested additional copies.
If you are a secondary school librarian or English teacher in the states of Idaho or Montana, please contact us about joining Skies of Rohan and receiving free book donations for your school. See the Participating Schools page for a list of schools and libraries that have received books from our organization.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS is often selected by middle and high school teachers as a reading assignment. It is also a frequent subject of many university English Literature courses. Skies of Rohan, in cooperation with the Education committee of The Tolkien Society and Tolkien publisher Houghton Mifflin, participates in encouraging and assisting educators in "Teaching Tolkien" in the classrooms. Teachers and librarians may find the information and material on our Teaching Tolkien page to be of interest.
2005 was the 50th anniversary of the complete publication of THE LORD OF THE RINGS. The first two volumes, The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, were published in 1954, while the third volume, The Return of the King, was published in October of 1955. To celebrate this anniversary, The Tolkien Society held a conference and convention in August of 2005 at Aston University in Birmingham, England. The chairman of Skies of Rohan represented the Idaho & Montana Tolkien Society. At the conference, Ms Howerton presented two papers in the Education stream: "Tolkien's Middle-earth: Lesson Plans for Secondary School Educators" and "JRR Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings: An Inspiration for Education around the World". To read a more detailed description, see the 2005 Press Release page.
Skies of Rohan - the Idaho & Montana Tolkien Society was very proud to have been chosen the "2003 - SMIAL OF THE YEAR" by The Tolkien Society at the Eleventy-One! Oxonmoot in Oxford, England in October 2003. This award is not made on a regular or yearly basis and is only made when a particular branch of the Tolkien Society has performed outstanding work. Skies of Rohan was named "Tolkien Society of the Year" based on our work in promoting JRR Tolkien and THE LORD OF THE RINGS in the realm of education.
THE LORD OF THE RINGS has been translated into many languages. Wherever the works of JRR Tolkien are read, more people are joined together in fellowship and comraderie. JRR Tolkien desired dragons as a boy and over his lifetime created a tale and a world that brought that desire to life for himself and all others, who at one time or another, have secretly desired dragons. Read an excellent book review that introduces THE LORD OF THE RINGS and Middle-earth under our link For those who desire Dragons .
