An annual academic conference devoted to the texts of J.R.R. Tolkien, will be held at the UVM campus in Burlington, Vermont from Friday, April 8th to Sunday, April 10th. From Hobbits to Dragons: 30 years of strolling through Tolkien's world with Unquendor, Baarlo, The Netherlands
In a hole...No, once upon a time in a remote corner of Europe there was a Tolkien Society. Quite an old one too... We are of course talking about the Dutch Tolkien Society Unquendor. It was founded in 1981, which means that next year we'll be celebrating our sixth lustrum. Needless to say this must be done in style, as we did with the previous lustra. The year 2011 marks the 75th anniversary of both C.S. Lewis’ publication of The Allegory of Love and J.R.R. Tolkien’s lecture “Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics. To commemorate these important anniversaries, Mythcon 42 will invite reflection on the impact of these critical works and how they offer new ways to view the fantastic in earlier texts as well as how they initiated many of the approaches modern fantasy applies to its reading of the medieval. Oxonmoot: The Tolkien Society, Oxford, England, UK
Oxonmoot is held in Oxford in September every year, usually on the weekend closest to the 22nd of September: Frodo and Bilbo's birthday. Most of the event is held in an Oxford college. There are usually around 100 to 200 in attendence. The moot usually includes talks, a quiz, an art show, a masquerade and other entertainments, a visit to Tolkien's grave in north Oxford, and last, but not least, the chance to spend a weekend in the company of other fans of Tolkien's work. Return of the Ring Tolkien Society Seminar - Leicestershire, England, UK
In 2012, from 16th - 20th August, Tolkien societies from around the world are collborating to organise The Return of the Ring, a Tolkien conference at Loughborough University. There will be several academic streams, plus at least one non-academic stream, family friendly items, and an informal fandom stream.
